Three
Gun Urban Rifle Match
December
05, 2009
As
usual I got to the club early to set up for the Service Rifle match.
I actually arrived extra early because the three gun match has so much
extra “stuff” to get ready. I
had to assemble and set up the three barriers, set up a table for the shotgun
and pistol stage, and, of course, the target frames plus all the registration
paraphernalia. Lucky for me some of the guys also showed up early to help out
with the set-up. Thanks guys; you
know who you are. Well, just as I pulled up to the gate I looked at the
thermometer on my truck console and it read 26 degrees.
Yes, 26 degrees of cold wind that pushed the wind chill somewhere in the
teens. I thought the cold might
keep the number of shooters down, but did I underestimate the PCSC Riflemen! We
had a total of 21 entries (some of the guys shot more than one gun). Did I mention it was cold and windy?
We
got started on time, and everything was going well until the temperature started
to climb. When I set up the range the ground was frozen, and I paid no attention
to that ground when I located the shotgun and pistol stage.
My only concern at that point was safety, right?
I’m sure you guessed it by now, that frozen ground turned to very cold
mud as the temp climbed! We went
home more than a little dirty!
Did
I mention it was cold? This is one
of the most difficult matches we shoot, but trying to toss a grenade (yep we
started off by throwing a dummy grenade and scoring the result), load and fire a
rifle several times, draw load and fire a pistol, reload that pistol, fire again
with the other hand (oops, best pistol score 96x100 Joel Powell, just had to
brag), pick up a shotgun, load and fire it, all with gloved or freezing hands
made the match that much more difficult. We
did experience a couple of rifle breakdowns and dropped magazines, but we
persevered. The weather, gun
troubles, and a tough scenario did not stop these riflemen from shooting good
scores. AR-15’s ruled the day in
this match. Did I mention it was COLD?
This
was also the last match of the 2009 Service Rifle Season, and a great season it
was. We finalized the Championship
Series with this match, where we saw two champions successfully defend their
titles, and one new champion step up onto the pedestal. The results are listed
below. Did I fail to mention it was
dang cold?

“The
Rattle Battle”
Great weather, light wind (unusual for PCSC), great rifles,
great friends and new friends what more could a rifleman want?
This was our famous “Rattle Battle” a rapid fire, shoot
and move forward match. We started
at 200 yards in the prone position, shooting 10 shots in 90 seconds.
We then have 2 minutes to pick up and move forward 50 yards and shoot 10
more shots kneeling or sitting position and again pick up and move forward 50
more yards to shoot offhand. It
sounds easy but the old ( in my case old means old) heart is beating and the
breathing is faster plus the shooting position is more difficult than the last,
it’s a tough match!
We had mostly M1 Garands and AR-15 rifles this match but
there was a scattering of ’03 Springfields, Mausers and M1A’s as well.
We did have some “first timer’s” at the match, they were; Thomas
Wadsworth, Mark Rose, William Hall and David Hill.
Welcome to the Service Rifle matches guys! Winners are listed below.
We also had a side match called the Deer Hunter.
This match was 5 shots in 2 minutes from a makeshift deer stand at 200
yards. We used a near life size
deer target with a very small scoring target added.
The match was any gun, any rest (from the deer stand) and any sight.
Would you believe an AR-15 with open sights won?
That’s just what happened; John Kampo shot a 25 x 50 score in this very
difficult match to win. Well done
John!
The 2009 Championship is still ongoing with one more match
left in the season, but there were some changes in the standings, see below.

Service
Rifle Match – August 16, 2009
A
200 Yard Timed Prone Match
Side
Match – “The Sniper”
Let’s
start out with how my day began for this match. I preloaded my truck the night before the match with all the
“stuff” needed except the rifle, money box, and my laptop.
I get up early, 5 AM, grab a cup of coffee and start the 50 mile drive to
the club. I get to about Springtown
(I live in North Richland Hills) and remember that I failed to bring my “thumb
drive” that has all the match data stored within!
OK, I think I can build a quick spreadsheet to use for registration, etc.
when I get to the club. Then I
think, “did I load the Sniper Hide”. The
answer to that question was no. OK,
we can shoot the “Sniper” match without the hide.
Man, did I bring a rifle and ammo? Yep,
I did bring enough “stuff” to at least shoot the match (this senior moment
thing is getting to be a problem). I
think, it just has to get better than this and I was right, well, at least until
I started shooting, but maybe I should hold that story for a different time!
This
match is one I like, and I think the rest of the PCSC Riflemen like as well.
The match is a nice slow pace from a good solid position, prone.
We had a full 15 minutes to shoot 20 rounds at the SRC target a mere 200
yards away. The wind was blowing
the usual 10 to 15 MPH, this is PCSC after all, but it was straight down range
and other than the dust and trying to use a vibrating spotting scope, was not a
big factor in the match. We had a
great turnout and had three visitors join in the fun. George Eichenberg, Robert Manglberger, and Eric Kilburn, all
members of the Tarleton State University Rifle team, had a bit of trouble
finding us, but made it with the help of Ron Woods and a cell phone.
Ron is also a TSU team shooter and part of our PCSC Riflemen as well.
The
“Sniper” match was a bit easier this year as we allowed the shooter to use a
rest from the prone position; last year it was elbows only.
The target for this match is the head and shoulder of the “bad guy”
behind the head and shoulders of the “hostage”.
Not a “hostage” survived last year! The target has three scoring
rings on each of the stylized people, and we deducted points for hitting the
hostage. I am pleased to report most
of the hostages survived this year but they did get nicked a couple of times.
I didn’t shoot “The Sniper,” but I could see the guys were having a
fun time with this event.

A
Modified John C. Garand Match
|
I
got to the club very early for this match due to a very full pick-up load of
“stuff” needed for the day’s event. I
had the normal load of shooting gear: gun, ammo boxes, spotting scope, prone
mat, etc. I also had all the food,
drinks and grilling equipment for our “Hotdog Burn.” Well, guess what, at 7 AM the good old PCSC Service Rifle Match
“Wind” was already blowing strong and steady! So what else is new, right?
The
PCSC Riflemen started showing up bright and early for this Modified John C.
Garand match. I could see many of
the guys had done what I had done for this match, didn’t get out to do a sight
check! I didn’t have time to
shoot any sighters like the rest of the guys; I was in the club house doing the
registration duties. I just shot
using data from my range book. So,
there is my excuse for not being “in the money” nice and early in this
article!
We
had three new shooters this month plus one that came back after about a three
year absence. The new shooters were: Robert Laramee shooting an M1 Garand; David
McCord also shooting a Garand; and Andy Mans with his Garand. Andy also proceeded to show us how to shoot that Garand!
Back after a too long absence from the Service Rifle Matches was Randy
Dykstra. Welcome to all and welcome
back Randy.

The
wind was tough on this 200 yard match. The
prone and sitting/kneeling scores were close to our usual, but the offhand
scores were down some. It is
difficult enough to shoot well offhand, but with a 25 to 30 MPH wind hitting you
in the back, it’s hard to keep that old front sight on target. This is true even if you are a big old round gun platform such as me!
We
had our first (hopefully not last) “Hotdog Burn” after the shooting was
over. Thanks to Chuck Garrett for
burning the dogs while I was helping everyone else score the targets. The hotdogs hit the spot, the shooting was fun, the fellowship with
friends outstanding, the laughter relaxing, and we all enjoyed another day in
the sun shooting our favorite rifles. The
smell of gun smoke was intoxicating!

board*, PCSC newsletter
and the PCSC website for more details.
2009 Club Service Rifle Championship will be based on points earned
during the year with a Champion declared for Overall Service Rifle
Champion, Division I Vintage Service Rifle Champion and Division II
Modern Service Rifle Champion.
Changes for 2009
• No competitor may win more than one award in a class or division
each match.
• No competitor may win more than one of the three championship
titles.
• An annual plaque listing the Service Rifle Champions will be
started.
• Championships will be decided on a total aggregate score system as
follows:
Overall Championship awarded to the competitor that accumulates the
highest combined total score in the two divisions.
Division I Championship awarded to the competitor that accumulates the
highest total score in Division I.
Division II Championship awarded to the competitor that accumulates the
highest total score in Division II.
Examples
1. Contestant #1 enters two different Division I rifles and has the
highest and second highest scores in the match. He will win the Division
I first place award with the highest score but, will not win the second
place award which will go to the next highest score and so on. This is
being done to spread out the awards to our shooters.
2. A contestant enters both divisions in a match. His score with each
rifle will count toward the championship of each division and the total
of the two scores will count toward the overall championship. If a
shooter enters two rifles in the same division as in example #1, the
highest score of the two will count toward the championship.
Shooter “A” enters two different AR-15 Division II rifles in a match
and scores 360x400 with one and 390x400 with rifle two.
Shooter “B” enters one M1A Division II rifle and scores 350x400.
Shooter “A” wins first place with his 390x400 score and shooter
“B” wins second place with his 350x400.
Shooter “A’s” 390x400 will be the score posted for the Division II
Championship. Shooter “B’s” 350x400 would of course be posted as
his score in the championship race.
Shooter “A” above also entered a Division I rifle and scores
359x400. His championship scoring would be as follows;
:
Shooter A Division I Division II Overall
Match 1 359 390 749 (359+390) the 360 score is tossed out.
Match 2 562 530 1092 and so on.
Shooter B
Match 1 0 did not enter 350 350 *
Match 2 570 540 1110 and so on.
*Remember this is the overall championship, how could one be an overall
champion if one does not shoot in both divisions?
All Service Rifle Matches are open to PCSC members and quests. All
general club safety rules will apply. All rifles will have ‘open bolt
flags’ installed when not in use. Only competitors and Range Officer
allowed on the firing line during the match relays, spectators must stay
behind the firing line. Competitors may enter more than one rifle in
different divisions or classes (pay entry fee for each) and each will be
treated a separate entry.
* Our bulletin board or
"forum" is current under construction. Notice will be
provided at the range and in the newsletter page for the web address
when completed. - Webmaster
*
The Oct 24 match has been revised due to erosion on the "C"
Range. The change is as follows:
Prone shot at 200 yards
Sitting/kneeling at 150 yards
Offhand at 100 yards
The "Deer Hunter" side match will be shot at 200 Yards.
